About Us
This site is your Invitation to participate in the new USA National Branch of Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women.
Sakyadhita, “Daughters of the Buddha,” is the world’s leading international organization of Buddhist women. It is an alliance of women (and men) committed to transforming the lives of Buddhist women. This international alliance was founded at the conclusion of the first International Conference on Buddhist Women, held in Bodhgaya, India, in 1987. Sakyadhita seeks to unite Buddhist women of diverse countries and traditions, to promote their welfare and to facilitate their work for the benefit of humanity. Members of Sakyadhita cooperate to help women develop their potential as scholars, practitioners, teachers, counselors, artists, community organizers, and compassionate social activists. Sakyadhita’s objectives are:
To establish an international alliance of Buddhist women
To advance the spiritual and secular welfare of the world’s women
To work for gender equity in Buddhist education, training institutional structures, and ordination
To promote harmony and dialogue among the Buddhist traditions and other religions
To encourage research and publications on topics of interest to Buddhist women
To foster compassionate social action for the benefit of humanity
To promote world peace through the teachings of the Buddha
Sakyadhita USA was established as a national branch of Sakyadhita International in June 2010. SUSA is made up of committed Buddhist laywomen and monastics/nuns who reside in the U.S. and are focussed on the needs and concerns of Buddhist women living in the U.S.
In in coming two or three years, Sakyadhita USA plans to organize a bi-annual North American Buddhist Women’s Conference that will include Sakyadhita USA, Sakyadhita Canada and dharma sisters in Mexico. This bi-annual conference will address the particular concerns of Buddhist women in North America, across all traditions and ethnicities. This ongoing effort will require a large number of volunteers and great fundraising effort.
