Bhikkhuni Upekkha (Ranjana Barua) was born in 1978 to a middle class traditional Theravada Buddhist family in the south part of India.
After the completion of her graduate studies in science (B.Sc – M.S.Cs) from India she requested to her teacher, Venerable K. Sangharakkita Mahathero
(Abbott of Ananda Buddha Vihar, Hyderabad, India) that she be sent to Taiwan for Bhikkhuni training. After ordaining as a novice in 2001 under Master
Ru Wu in Yuan Kuang Buddhist College (Tao Yuan, Taiwan) and studying for four years she received her diploma in the Chinese Mahayana tradition, Taiwan.
She ordained as a Bhikkhuni in 2008 under Master Ching Hsin at Kuang Temple (Kaoshiung, Taiwan). Venerable Upekkha has also received a MA in Pali and Buddhism,
from Kelaniya University in Sri Lanka.
Venerable Upekkha is currently doing her M.Phil and PhD research studies (Pali and Buddhist studies) at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka.
She is a dedicated and committed nun and when asked what her goals are she replied:
As Venerable Upekkha is a student in Sri Lanka, and could not afford the air-ticket and other expenses for this conference,
we are delighted to support her and make this opportunity for her to meet, study, share the Dhamma and take part in this rich and exciting
international conference on Buddhist women.
