Kritsana Ruksachom: The Thai Buddhist Nuns Institute and its Work in Thailand

The purpose of this paper is to explore the activities of the Thai Nuns’ Institute and to give examples of the Thai nuns’ accomplishments. Nuns have to work hard for being recognized by lay people in the society. That is different from the monks’ situation. The monks are ordained as Bhikkus and people are therefore immediately respecting and supporting them. At present Buddhist women are progressive and women have great potentials. The Thai nuns have a wide range of activities, such as training courses for children and teenagers at the nunneries, meditation instructions to the general public, some branches offer training in vocational subjects for lay people, some nuns are teaching students at secondary school, there are nuns who run kindergartens and nuns are managing a nuns’ college, which offers Bachelor’s degree in the study of Buddhism and Philosophy.

There are twenty-five nunneries affiliated with The Thai Nuns’ Institute and I have recently become in charge of one of them. This branch of The Thai Nuns’ Institute, which I am responsible for is situated in Chainat Province in Central Thailand, in a village called Utaphoaw. At the nunnery we are working together in teams and also inviting nuns from other places. The paper will describe the Buddhist camps for children that we organise two times a year and the paper will also tell about the retreat project that we have. These activities are very much appreciated by the participants and the children’s parentsIn this paper I will explain what these activities imply for the nuns’ relationship with the lay people.

Thai nuns are interested in education and today many nuns are studying. The paper will present the different educational possibilities Thai nuns have today. However, the Thai nuns’ good results in education have not made the government recognize us as ordained nuns. They identify the Thai nuns simply as people who keep the eight Buddhist precepts.
