Karma Lekshe Tsomo : The Buddha and the Spirit World: Healing Praxis in a Himalayan Monastery

For centuries, the Buddhist worldview has affected attitudes toward illness and health among the diverse peoples of the Himalayan region. The Tibetan medical system, tantric ritual practices, and Buddhist practices for the accumulation of merit remain the primary resources for achieving physical and mental well-being. Indigenous methods of healing, such as divination, oracle healers, and exorcism, are equally important in the lives of the people. In recent years, another dimension has been added, with the increasing availability of Western medical care. Based on a recent case study of a young nun who is afflicted by violent seizures in a monastery in the Spiti Valley, this paper investigates how these diverse belief systems and healing practices interact and sometimes come into conflict in the daily lives of Himalayan villagers.
